About the ClubThe Wellington Chess Club was formed in 1876 and is one of the oldest chess clubs in New Zealand. We have met in a number of rooms over the years. Since the 1990s the club has been at Turnbull House, Bowen Street. Fine old building, short walk from the railway station. Note, August 2012: Turnbull House has been closed at short notice for earthquake work. See the home page for the temporary arrangement at St Peters. Club nightsTuesdays, 7.30pm. Informal games at the start of the evening, rated tournament games once pairings go up. Time controls are usually 75 minutes plus 30 seconds a move for the longer club events, and something quicker for the rapid championship later in the year. We run an A, B and C grade club championship (round robin groups), a rapid championship, and the odd one-night lightning. The Wellington Easter Open is organised seperately and is advertised on the NZCF calender. How to joinTurn up on a Tuesday and introduce yourself to whoever is on the door. You do not need to be a strong player. We have members from social grade through to national championship strength. Subscriptions for 2012 (unchanged from last year, for the moment):
Cash or cheque payable to Wellington Chess Club. The treasurer will sort you out with a reciept. NZCF registration, if you want rated games, is extra and can be done thru the club. JuniorsThe club has had a small but keen junior group for a number of years. Coaching is informal, stronger members sit with the younger players before the senior session. Results and a few photographs are on the Youth section. That part of the site hasnt been touched for a while but the tables are still there. |
